Ron Wilson, “Poet Lariat,” announces a first-ever Cowboy Poetry contest for cowboys, cowgirls, ranchers, farmers, women in agriculture, or anyone with an interest.

“We recently moved back to the family ranch, so to celebrate we are offering this poetry contest,” Wilson said.

Below is the first part of an original poem written by Wilson. Participants are encouraged to write a concluding stanza, no more than eight lines, and mail to Ron using the address at the right.

The winning entry will receive $100 and a free, autographed copy of Wilson’s first book, “Wagon Tongue.” Entries must be received by April 30, 2007.

Here is the poem:

Finish this poem and send in your entry. If you have questions, contact Ron Wilson at 785-539-7899 or ron@ronscowboypoetry.com.

Pocket It
By Ron Wilson, Poet Lariat

When it comes to laundry time, by gosh,
We clean out the pockets of the clothes in the wash.
It seems we have quite a stash,
When we look at all my pocket trash.

I wonder what the doctor finds in his clothes?
An old prescription or pill, I suppose?
What does the lawyer find when she does these chores?
A used deposition or citation or more?

But when we clean out my work shirts,
I’m amazed what I find along with the dirt.
There’s two range cubes and a sale barn receipt,
A rusty old wire and an extra horse treat.

Three fencing staples, half a tablet of Bute,
A broken spring off the headgate at the chute.
